For internal partitioning-off of a room, a secondary but nonetheless important benefit of electrochromic switchable glass is its acoustic baffling attribute, i.e. noise reduction. We can also increase its acoustic rating by the application of special PVB interlayers, or, triple laminating the smart glass panel.
Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZ 2107:2000 provides recommendations for design sound levels and reverberation times for building interiors. These levels are frequently used as a basis for acoustical design mechanical services. A typical example of AS2107 Recommended Design Noise Level ranges from 30dB(A) as ‘Satisfactory’, to 40dB(A) as ‘Maximum’.
Another measurement that Australian/New Zealand Standard ISO 717.1:2004 uses for ambient sound levels is Rw Weighted Sound Reduction Index. The Rw is a number used to rate the effectiveness of a soundproofing system or material. Increasing the Rw by one translates to a reduction of approximately 1db in noise level. Therefore, the higher the Rw number, the better a sound insulator it will be.
Consultation with an Acoustic Engineer will help you obtain the acoustic properties you require.
